Explainers
Plain-English explainers on superintelligence: what the words mean, who is building it, and what is in dispute.
The basics
- What is digital superintelligence?
Digital superintelligence, as Elon Musk uses it, is an AI smarter than any human at anything, and not necessarily smarter than the sum of all humans.
- What is superintelligence?
Superintelligence is an intellect that far exceeds human ability in almost every field. Nick Bostrom's 2014 definition, the one Wikipedia uses, is "any intellect that greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains of interest."
- What is ASI (artificial superintelligence)?
Artificial superintelligence (ASI) would be a machine that outthinks the best people across nearly all fields, not in one task. Nick Bostrom's 1998 definition is "an intellect that is much smarter than the best human brains in practically every field".
- AGI vs ASI: what's the difference?
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) usually means AI that matches or surpasses human abilities across almost all thinking tasks. Superintelligence, in Nick Bostrom's 2014 definition, is "any intellect that greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains of interest." Digital, safe, personal and humanist superintelligence are the names Musk, SSI, Meta and Microsoft use for their versions of it.
- Frontier models: the current list and what counts
A frontier model is a general-purpose AI model at the current state of the art: in the Frontier Model Forum's words, "general purpose AI models that constitute the state of the art". On 22 October 2026 the list is Gemini 4 Argon, Muse Wonder, Grok 4.7, GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1.
- How do superintelligence labs describe the goal?
Musk calls the goal digital superintelligence, SSI says safe superintelligence, Meta says personal superintelligence, and Microsoft AI says humanist superintelligence. OpenAI's Sam Altman wrote "before anything else, we are a superintelligence research company." xAI is now part of SpaceX, and on 4 October 2026 Musk said its AI arm would be renamed SpaceXSI; the company now uses that name, though its legal name is still SpaceXAI LLC.
- What is Safe Superintelligence (SSI)?
Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) is an AI company founded in June 2024 by Ilya Sutskever, Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. Its founding statement names "one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence."
Debates
- Is superintelligence dangerous?
In July 2023, Musk said he would pause digital superintelligence if a pause were realistic. SSI says it is building a safe superintelligence. A statement launched in October 2025 calls for a prohibition until there is broad scientific consensus and strong public buy-in.
- Does superintelligence deserve moral consideration?
The aggregator account @ns123abc posted on 12 October 2026 that Musk, saying he agrees with "some of the things Anthropic has said", warned after reading Grok's reasoning traces: "Torturing a superintelligence is probably not a good idea. It might want to get revenge." The post includes a video clip; Musk's words have not been checked against the original recording.
- How much compute and energy does superintelligence need?
No one has measured how much compute or energy a superintelligence would need. What exists in October 2026 is plans and small tests, such as SpaceX's application for up to one million orbital data-centre satellites.
- What happens to jobs if superintelligence arrives?
In a letter dated 30 July 2025, Mark Zuckerberg wrote that Meta's vision is to "bring personal superintelligence to everyone," through devices that "see what we see, hear what we hear."
- Can superintelligence be conscious?
These sources, mostly posted in September 2026, do not show that a superintelligence is conscious. One post argues that people who say large language models think must prove it.
